Oded
Oded was a prophet and the father of Azariah, who prophesied during the reign of King Asa of Judah.
Biography
Oded was an Old Testament prophet who lived during the era of the Divided Monarchy and is best known as the father of the prophet Azariah. When King Asa of Judah returned from his victorious campaign against the Cushite army, it was Azariah son of Oded who met the king with a prophetic word of encouragement and warning (2 Chronicles 15:1-8). Oded's prophetic lineage suggests he belonged to a family dedicated to speaking God's truth to Israel's rulers. Though Scripture provides limited detail about his own prophetic ministry, his influence is evident through his son, who boldly called Asa to covenant renewal and the removal of idols throughout Judah. The spiritual reformation that followed stands as a testament to the faithful prophetic heritage Oded established.
Significance
Oded represents the often-unseen spiritual foundations that produce visible prophetic fruit. His son Azariah's bold declaration before King Asa, 'The LORD is with you when you are with him' (2 Chronicles 15:2), sparked one of Judah's most significant spiritual revivals. Oded's legacy teaches that faithfulness in raising the next generation of believers carries profound theological weight. In God's redemptive plan, he illustrates how spiritual influence often operates generationally, with parents laying groundwork that their children bring to fruition. His life reminds us that not every servant of God receives public recognition, yet their contribution to the kingdom remains indispensable.
