Pathrusim
Pathrusim, a People from Mizraim, son of Ham, according to Genesis 10:14.
Biography
The Pathrusim are an ancient people group listed in the Table of Nations as descendants of Mizraim (Egypt), the son of Ham, in Genesis 10:14 and 1 Chronicles 1:12. Their name connects them to Pathros, the Egyptian term for Upper Egypt, the southern region of the Nile Valley stretching from the area south of Memphis to the first cataract at Aswan. This identification places them among the earliest inhabitants of one of civilization's most significant regions. The Pathrusim appear alongside other Mizraimite peoples including the Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, Casluhim, and Caphtorim. The prophets later reference Pathros as a distinct region, with Jeremiah noting Jewish refugees fleeing there (Jeremiah 44:1, 15) and Ezekiel prophesying its desolation and eventual restoration (Ezekiel 29:14).
Significance
The Pathrusim hold significance within the biblical Table of Nations as part of God's comprehensive accounting of post-Flood humanity. Their inclusion in Genesis 10 affirms the biblical worldview that all peoples derive from a common origin and fall within the scope of divine sovereignty. As inhabitants of Upper Egypt, they represent one of the earliest centers of human civilization, demonstrating how the descendants of Noah spread across the ancient Near East. The prophetic references to Pathros in Jeremiah and Ezekiel show that even centuries later, this people and their land remained within God's purview of judgment and redemption. Their genealogical placement under Mizraim helps map the ethnic landscape of the ancient world as Scripture presents it.
