Peresh
Peresh, a son of Machir and grandson of Manasseh, mentioned in the genealogy of 1 Chronicles 7.
Biography
Peresh was a son of Machir and his wife Maacah, and a grandson of Manasseh, one of Joseph's two sons. His genealogy is recorded in 1 Chronicles 7:16, where he is listed alongside his brother Sheresh within the extended family tree of the half-tribe of Manasseh. Peresh's father Machir was a significant figure in Israelite history, described as a warrior whose descendants settled in Gilead, the Transjordan territory allocated to the half-tribe of Manasseh (Numbers 32:39-40; Joshua 17:1). The Machirite clan became one of the most prominent military families in eastern Israel. Peresh's son Ulam is noted for fathering Bedan, continuing a lineage known for martial prowess and territorial leadership in the Gilead region throughout Israel's history.
Significance
Peresh's genealogical placement within the Machirite clan of Manasseh connects him to one of Israel's most formidable warrior families. The Machirites conquered and settled Gilead, demonstrating the kind of bold faith that characterized the conquest generation. Peresh's lineage represents the continuity of that martial heritage across generations. His family's occupation of Transjordan territory also illustrates the diversity of Israel's settlement patterns and the breadth of God's land promises. The careful preservation of names like Peresh in the Chronicler's record affirms that every branch of Israel's family tree was valued and remembered, contributing to the complete picture of God's covenant people.
