Rekem
Rekem was a son of Hebron, mentioned in the genealogy of the tribe of Judah.
Biography
Rekem son of Hebron appears in the genealogical register of the tribe of Judah found in 1 Chronicles 2:43–44. He is listed among the sons of Hebron, alongside Korah, Tappuah, and Shema, within the extended Calebite clan. Hebron, his father, was a significant figure in the lineage of Caleb son of Hezron, and the clan's geographic associations with the city of Hebron in the hill country of Judah suggest deep roots in that region. Rekem's son is given as Shammai, extending the genealogy further. Like many individuals recorded in Chronicles' tribal lists, Rekem's significance lies primarily in his position within the web of Judahite descent rather than in any recorded personal narrative.
Significance
Rekem's placement within the Hebronite branch of Judah's genealogy connects him to one of the most historically resonant localities in all of Scripture. Hebron was where Abraham and Sarah were buried, where David was first crowned king, and where the promises of the land were anchored. By recording Rekem's descent in this lineage, the Chronicler affirms the continuity of the covenant community across generations. The genealogies of Chronicles served the post-exilic community as a form of theological memory, grounding their identity in the promises made to the patriarchs. Rekem's name, preserved in this list, testifies that God's faithfulness extends to every branch of the covenant family tree.
