Biography

Rohgah appears in the genealogical register of the tribe of Asher recorded in 1 Chronicles 7:34, listed among the sons of Shomer (also rendered Shamer). As a member of the tribe of Asher, one of the twelve tribes of Israel descended from Jacob's son Asher and his mother Zilpah, Rohgah inhabited the northern territories of ancient Canaan. Though no narrative details about his personal life are preserved in Scripture, his inclusion in the Chronicler's genealogical account places him within the broader tribal structure of Israel during the period of the Divided Monarchy. The name Rohgah may carry connotations of outcry or shouting, though its precise etymology remains debated among scholars.

Significance

Rohgah's inclusion in the tribal genealogy of Asher in 1 Chronicles 7 underscores the meticulous preservation of Israel's tribal heritage and covenantal identity. The Chronicler's careful recording of otherwise obscure names reflects the theological conviction that every member of God's covenant people possesses worth and standing before Him. For post-exilic Israel, such genealogies served as vital proof of tribal lineage, confirming one's place within the community of the redeemed. Rohgah's name, however minor, testifies to the continuity of God's faithfulness across generations within the tribe of Asher.
