Shiphi
Shiphi was a Simeonite descendant of Ziza who lived during the reign of King Hezekiah.
Biography
Shiphi was a Simeonite leader mentioned in 1 Chronicles 4:37 as the son of Allon, grandson of Jedaiah, and a descendant of Ziza in the lineage of Shimei. He lived during the reign of Hezekiah, king of Judah, a period of notable religious reform and territorial expansion. The Chronicler records that during Hezekiah's era, a group of Simeonite clan leaders expanded their territory by driving out the Hamites and Meunites in the region of Gedor, finding pastureland for their flocks. This migration reflects the Simeonite tribe's characteristic dispersal within Judah's territory, as alluded to in Jacob's blessing (Genesis 49:7).
Significance
Shiphi's inclusion in the Simeonite genealogy of 1 Chronicles 4 reflects the Chronicler's theological concern to demonstrate God's faithfulness to all twelve tribes, including Simeon, which had no defined territory of its own but was scattered within Judah. The reference to Simeonite expansion during Hezekiah's reign suggests that divine blessing attended the covenant community even for marginal clans during times of spiritual renewal. Shiphi thus serves as a representative witness to the continuity of God's covenant purposes across all Israel's tribes, and to the connection between national faithfulness and material blessing.
