Tiras
Tiras was a son of Japheth and grandson of Noah, listed among the nations descended from Noah after the flood.
Biography
Tiras is listed in the Table of Nations in Genesis 10:2 and 1 Chronicles 1:5 as the seventh and last son of Japheth, son of Noah. As with many of the descendants catalogued in Genesis 10, Tiras represents not merely an individual but the ancestor of a people group. Scholars have proposed various identifications for the nation descended from Tiras, with the most common suggestion being the Tyrsenoi or Tyrrhenians, a maritime people associated in ancient sources with the Aegean region, and perhaps ancestors of the Etruscans of Italy. Some older scholars connected the name with Thrace. Whatever the precise ethnic identification, Tiras was understood in the ancient world to represent one of the foundational lineages through which humanity repopulated the earth following the Flood.
Significance
Tiras's inclusion in the Table of Nations reflects one of Scripture's most expansive theological claims: that all the peoples of the earth share a common origin in Noah and, through him, in the God who created and redeemed humanity. The Table of Nations in Genesis 10 is not ethnography for its own sake but a proclamation that the God of Israel is the God of all nations. Tiras and his descendants, whoever they were historically, are encompassed within God's sovereign care and ultimate redemptive purpose. The universal scope of Genesis 10 anticipates the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19), in which disciples are sent to make followers of Jesus among all nations, the very nations whose origins the Table of Nations traces.
