Uzzah
Uzzah, a Levite of the Merarite clan, was the son of Shimei.
Biography
Uzzah was a Levite of the Merarite clan, identified in the genealogies of 1 Chronicles 6 as a son of Shimei. The Merarites were one of the three major subdivisions of the tribe of Levi, assigned responsibility for transporting the structural components of the tabernacle (Numbers 3:36-37). During the era of the Divided Monarchy, the Levitical clans maintained their hereditary roles in temple administration and worship. Uzzah of this Merarite line should be distinguished from the more prominent, and tragic, Uzzah, son of Abinadab, whose story is recounted in 2 Samuel 6 and 1 Chronicles 13. This Uzzah's place in the genealogical record preserved the continuity of Levitical service through the generations.
Significance
As a member of the Merarite clan, Uzzah son of Shimei stands within the enduring Levitical lineage entrusted with the care of God's sanctuary. The detailed preservation of Levitical genealogies in Chronicles reflects the theological conviction that Israel's worship must be maintained by properly consecrated, identifiable servants. Even lesser-known Levites like this Uzzah remind readers that the sacred service of God depends not only on dramatic moments but on faithful, generational continuity, a pattern pointing toward the eternal priesthood ultimately fulfilled in Christ (Hebrews 7:24).
