Biography

Uzzi was a grandson of Benjamin, listed among the sons of Bela in the genealogical records of 1 Chronicles 7:7. Bela was Benjamin's firstborn son (Genesis 46:21), and his descendants formed one of the principal clans of the tribe. Uzzi's generation belonged to the era of Israel's sojourn in Egypt, when the tribe of Benjamin was establishing its foundational clan structures. The genealogy in which Uzzi appears was compiled to enumerate the valiant warriors of the tribe, reflecting the Chronicler's interest in military readiness as a feature of Israel's tribal identity. Like many figures in Chronicles' genealogical sections, Uzzi is known solely through his place in the lineage, yet his inclusion affirms the completeness of Benjamin's tribal record.

Significance

Uzzi's listing among Bela's sons in 1 Chronicles 7 reflects the Chronicler's theological concern to establish the full genealogical integrity of Israel's tribes. Benjamin, as the youngest of Jacob's sons and the tribe that would later produce King Saul and, ultimately, the apostle Paul (Philippians 3:5), required careful genealogical documentation. Even in his obscurity, Uzzi represents one of the many nameless faithful whose lineage carried Israel's story forward. His inclusion reminds readers that God's redemptive purposes flow through every generation, not just the memorable heroes, sustaining the covenant community across centuries of Egyptian bondage.
