Uzziah
Uzziah (Azariah) was king of Judah, known for his long and prosperous reign.
Biography
Uzziah, also known as Azariah, was the tenth king of Judah, reigning approximately 792-740 BC, one of the longest and most prosperous reigns in Judah's history (2 Kings 15:1-7; 2 Chronicles 26). He came to the throne at sixteen years of age after his father Amaziah and pursued military campaigns that extended Judah's southern territory, rebuilding Elath and subjugating the Philistines, Arabians, and Meunites. He fortified Jerusalem with towers and developed a formidable army equipped with innovative war machinery. However, his pride led him to enter the temple to burn incense, a prerogative reserved for priests alone, and he was struck with leprosy as divine judgment (2 Chronicles 26:16-21). He lived in isolation until his death. Isaiah's foundational vision (Isaiah 6:1) is dated to the year of Uzziah's death.
Significance
Uzziah's reign encapsulates the biblical paradox of success leading to spiritual pride and consequential downfall. His early faithfulness, guided by the prophet Zechariah, brought remarkable national prosperity and military strength (2 Chronicles 26:5). Yet his hubris in usurping the priestly role demonstrated that even the most successful leaders remain accountable to God's ordained order. His leprosy, marking him as ceremonially unclean, effectively ended his public reign. The timing of Isaiah's commissioning at Uzziah's death (Isaiah 6) suggests that the prophet's ministry arose precisely when human leadership failed, pointing to the incomparable sovereignty and holiness of the Lord enthroned above all earthly kings.
