Biography
Uzziel was the fourth son of Kohath, himself the second son of Levi (Exodus 6:18). This made Uzziel the uncle of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, a familial relationship of considerable significance in the history of Israel. Through his sons Mishael and Elzaphan, Uzziel became the ancestor of a Levitical subclan, the Uzzielites, who are enumerated in Numbers 3:27-30 as part of the Kohathite division responsible for carrying the most sacred elements of the tabernacle. When Nadab and Abihu died before the Lord (Leviticus 10:1-2), it was Uzziel's sons Mishael and Elzaphan whom Moses summoned to carry the bodies outside the camp (Leviticus 10:4-5), a solemn duty that underscored the family's role in maintaining sacred order.
Significance
Uzziel's position as a son of Kohath places him at the heart of Israelite priestly lineage and Levitical service. His descendants, the Uzzielites, shared in the awesome and dangerous responsibility of transporting the ark of the covenant and the most holy furnishings of the tabernacle, duties that required not only physical capability but profound reverence for God's holiness. The role his sons Mishael and Elzaphan played in removing the bodies of Nadab and Abihu illustrates that the Uzzielite family served at critical moments of divine judgment and communal purification. Through Uzziel, the Kohathite ministry of proximity to the holy things of God was sustained across generations, foreshadowing Christ's own ministry as the one who draws near to the Father on our behalf.
