Zerah
Zerah the Ethiopian led a vast army against Judah but was defeated by King Asa (2Ch.14.9).
Biography
Zerah the Ethiopian (or Cushite) was a military commander who led a vast army, described as a million men with three hundred chariots, against the kingdom of Judah during the reign of King Asa (2 Chronicles 14:9). He advanced as far as Mareshah in the Shephelah region of Judah, where Asa assembled his forces and prayed a remarkable prayer of dependence: 'LORD, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, LORD our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army' (2 Chronicles 14:11). The LORD routed Zerah's forces before Asa and Judah, who pursued the retreating army as far as Gerar and plundered the surrounding towns.
Significance
The account of Zerah the Ethiopian functions as a classic biblical illustration of holy war theology: victory does not depend on military parity but on trust in God. Asa's prayer and the subsequent divine rout affirm that the LORD is the true warrior on behalf of those who seek him (2 Chronicles 14:11-12). Zerah's massive army, a force seemingly overwhelming to Judah, became the stage on which God demonstrated his incomparable power. The victory also fulfilled the Chronicler's theological pattern: faithfulness to God results in peace and prosperity, while dependence on foreign powers invites judgment. Zerah's defeat stands as a monument to the sufficiency of God and the power of covenant prayer in the face of impossible odds.
