Aroer
Aroer is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Transjordan in modern-day Israel. Known today as Arair. It appears across 13 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
Aroer on the Arnon (modern Arair, Arabic Ara'ir) was the principal city of that name, situated directly on the northern rim of the Arnon gorge. It appears prominently in the territorial narratives of Numbers and Deuteronomy as a key landmark in the conquest of Sihon's Amorite kingdom. Deuteronomy 2:36 specifies that the Israelites took every city from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon northward; Joshua 12:2 identifies it as the southern extremity of Sihon's rule. The city was allotted to the tribe of Reuben (Joshua 13:16) and was later built up by the Reubenites (Numbers 32:34). In the period of the judges, Jephthah's campaign against Ammon extended "from Aroer to the entrance of Minnith" (Judges 11:33). The Mesha Stele (9th century BC) records the Moabite king Mesha rebuilding Aroer on the Arnon, confirming Moabite control had displaced Israelite presence by the 9th century. The prophet Isaiah mentions the area in his oracle against Moab (Isaiah 17:2).
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Ancient Aroer on the Arnon is identified with modern Ara'ir (Arair) in Jordan, where the northern rim of the Wadi Mujib gorge provides a commanding position over the crossing below. Excavations at Ara'ir have revealed continuous occupation from the Early Bronze Age through the Byzantine period, with Iron Age remains being especially significant. The site shows evidence of destruction and rebuilding consistent with the turbulent history recorded in the Mesha Stele and biblical texts. A Late Bronze Age gap in occupation has been noted by excavators, which raises scholarly discussion about the timing of the Israelite conquest. The site remains accessible and continues to be studied within the context of broader Moabite and Transjordanian archaeology.
