Ashan
Ashan is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Khirbet Asan. It appears across 4 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
Ashan was a town in the tribal territory of Simeon, situated within the broader Judean lowlands and Negev. It appears in Joshua 15:42 as part of the district of Libnah within Judah's allotment, and then in Joshua 19:7 and 1 Chronicles 4:32 as assigned to the tribe of Simeon — one of the few towns Simeon received as an enclave within Judah's territory, reflecting the fulfillment of Jacob's prophecy that Simeon would be scattered within Israel (Genesis 49:7). In 1 Chronicles 6:59, Ashan is listed among the Levitical cities assigned from the tribe of Judah, showing that portions of its territory served the priestly classes. The triple appearance of Ashan in boundary and city lists underscores its administrative importance in the settlement period even if no specific narrative events occurred within its walls. Its Levitical designation connects it to Israel's religious infrastructure — the network of towns that housed and supported the priests and Levites dispersed throughout the tribal territories rather than confined to a single region.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Ashan is tentatively identified with Khirbet Asan (or Khirbet 'Assan), located in the northern Negev and Judean foothills region of modern Israel. The identification is based on the similarity of name and the geographical context of the tribal lists in Joshua. Archaeological surveys in the area have identified Iron Age occupation levels. The site sits within a zone of transitional ecology between the Mediterranean woodland zone and the drier Negev steppe, suitable for the mixed farming and pastoralism that would have supported a Simeonite-Levitical community. Full excavation of the site has not been undertaken. The broader Beersheba Valley zone, in which Ashan is located, has been extensively surveyed and shows dense Iron Age settlement patterns consistent with early Israelite habitation.
