Bezer
Bezer is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Transjordan in modern-day Jordan. Known today as Umm el Amad. It appears across 4 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
Bezer was one of the six cities of refuge appointed by Moses and later confirmed by Joshua for the tribes east of the Jordan River (Deuteronomy 4:43; Joshua 20:8). Situated in the wilderness plateau of the Reubenite highlands in Transjordan, Bezer served a critical legal and humanitarian purpose in ancient Israel: any person who accidentally caused the death of another could flee to a city of refuge and receive protection from the avenger of blood until a fair trial could be held before the congregation. This institution reflected the Mosaic covenant's concern for justice tempered by mercy. Bezer was allotted to the Reubenites and also designated as a Levitical city, assigned to the Merarite Levites (Joshua 21:36; 1 Chronicles 6:78). This dual designation underscored its administrative importance within the tribal structure of Israel east of the Jordan. Though Bezer receives no further narrative attention in Scripture, its role as a sanctuary city embodied the divine principle that even in cases of unintentional sin, provision was made for protection and due process under the law of God.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Bezer is tentatively identified with Umm el-Amad, a site in the highlands of Moab east of the Dead Sea in modern Jordan. The location fits the general biblical description of a settlement within Reubenite territory on the Transjordan plateau. Surface surveys in the region have revealed pottery sherds and architectural remains consistent with Iron Age occupation, broadly corresponding to the period of Israelite settlement. However, definitive archaeological excavation of the site has not been conducted, and the identification remains uncertain among scholars. The region as a whole was part of the historically contested Moabite plateau, making precise site identification challenging without further stratigraphic investigation.
