Biziothiah

cityOld Testament1 verse

Biziothiah is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.

Biblical History

Biziothiah is mentioned only once in the Old Testament, in the list of towns within the inheritance of the tribe of Judah in the Negev (Joshua 15:28). Its appearance in this administrative catalog places it among the southernmost settlements of Judah's tribal allotment, in the arid steppe zone bordering the wilderness of Sinai. The name itself is difficult to interpret with certainty; some scholars have proposed that the Hebrew text at Joshua 15:28 may reflect a scribal variant, and the Septuagint reading differs from the Masoretic tradition at this point. Like many of the minor Negev towns listed in Joshua 15, Biziothiah likely functioned as a small agricultural and pastoral settlement on the frontier of Israelite habitation. These border towns played an important role in defining Israelite territorial claims in the south, serving as the outer boundary markers of the promised land allotted to Judah. Though no narrative event is attached to Biziothiah, its inclusion in the sacred land register of Joshua reflects the biblical conviction that every settlement within the inheritance of God's people held significance before him.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

Biziothiah's precise location remains unidentified in modern scholarship. No archaeological site has been confidently matched to the name, partly because the biblical text at Joshua 15:28 may contain textual variants that complicate identification. The Negev region where it would have been situated has been extensively surveyed by Israeli archaeologists, revealing networks of small Iron Age settlements and earlier Bronze Age encampments. Without a firm textual or topographical anchor, Biziothiah remains one of the obscure Negev towns whose location is lost to history. Future surveys or inscriptional discoveries in the northern Negev could potentially shed light on its ancient position.
