Biblical History

Elishah appears in Genesis 10:4 and 1 Chronicles 1:7 as a son of Javan, placing it within the Table of Nations as one of the territories associated with the Greek world and the Aegean basin. In Ezekiel 27:7, the prophet's famous lament over Tyre mentions that "blue and purple from the coastlands of Elishah" served as the awning of Tyre's great merchant ship, a reference to the prized Tyrian purple dye for which the eastern Mediterranean was renowned. This single reference locates Elishah as a coastal trading partner of Phoenicia, supplying luxury textiles that decorated the decks of Tyre's fleet. Cyprus, with its abundant copper resources and its strategic position at the intersection of Levantine, Aegean, and Egyptian trade routes, is the identification most widely accepted by scholars. The island was known to ancient Near Eastern sources as Alashiya, a major trading partner mentioned in the Amarna Letters and Ugaritic texts. Elishah thus represents the westward reach of biblical geography, connecting Israel's prophetic vision of the nations to the maritime commercial world of the ancient Mediterranean.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

The identification of biblical Elishah with Cyprus (ancient Alashiya) is supported by substantial textual and archaeological evidence. Alashiya appears frequently in Late Bronze Age diplomatic correspondence including the Amarna Letters (14th century BC), where it is described as a major exporter of copper and luxury goods to Egypt and the Levant. Archaeological excavations across Cyprus, particularly at Enkomi, Kition, and Hala Sultan Tekke, have revealed wealthy Late Bronze Age cities with extensive evidence of copper production and long-distance trade connections to Egypt, the Levant, and the Aegean. Cypriot pottery is found throughout the eastern Mediterranean in Late Bronze Age contexts. The island's role as a supplier of purple-dyed textiles and copper aligns precisely with Ezekiel's reference to the coastlands of Elishah.
