Gibeah
Gibeah is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as south of Hebron. It appears across 2 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
This Gibeah is situated in the hill country south of Hebron within the tribal territory of Judah, referenced in Joshua 15:57 as part of the detailed Judean town list. It is distinct from the more famous Gibeah of Benjamin to the north, and represents one of several sites sharing the common Hebrew toponym meaning 'hill.' Its inclusion in the Judean highland settlements reflects the dense network of Iron Age villages that populated this rugged terrain during the period of settlement and early monarchy. The Judean hill country surrounding Hebron was of considerable agricultural and strategic importance: the region produced grain, olives, and livestock, and its elevated terrain made it naturally defensible. Caleb's descendants settled much of this highland area after the initial conquest (Joshua 15:13–19), and the towns enumerated in Joshua 15 represent the administrative geography of Judah as it existed during the monarchy. Though Gibeah south of Hebron played no dramatic role in the major narratives of Scripture, its presence in the town list confirms it as a functioning settlement within the organized territorial life of ancient Judah.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
The Gibeah south of Hebron is tentatively placed in the vicinity of Jab'a, a site in the southern Judean hills. This general area has been covered by archaeological surveys identifying Iron Age I and II pottery scatters at numerous small sites, consistent with the dense settlement pattern described in the Joshua 15 town list. No major excavation has targeted this specific Gibeah, and the identification remains tentative, relying primarily on geographical correspondence and phonetic similarity between the ancient name and the modern Arabic toponym. The Judean hills contain many unexcavated Iron Age sites that likely correspond to the towns named in the biblical lists.
