Mahalab
Mahalab is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Phoenicia in modern-day Israel. Known today as Khirbet al Mahalib. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.
Biblical History
Mahalab, also rendered Ahlab in some translations, appears in Judges 1:31, which records the incomplete conquest of the promised land by the Israelite tribes. The text states that the tribe of Asher did not drive out the inhabitants of several cities, including Mahalab (Ahlab), meaning the Canaanite population continued to live among them. This failure to fully dispossess the Canaanites would have lasting consequences for Israel, as these remaining populations became sources of religious temptation and cultural compromise. Mahalab was situated in the coastal territory assigned to Asher in the Phoenician region of what is today southern Lebanon. The inability of Asher to take possession of cities like Mahalab illustrates a pattern repeated across multiple tribes in Judges 1, where Israel's obedience fell short of God's command to take full possession of the land. This incomplete conquest set the stage for the cycles of apostasy, oppression, and deliverance that characterize the entire book of Judges, demonstrating the consequences of partial obedience to God's instructions.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Mahalab has been identified with Khirbet al-Mahalib, located in the coastal region of southern Lebanon north of the modern Israeli border, in the area historically associated with the territory of Asher and the Phoenician coast. The site preserves the ancient Semitic root of the name. Some scholars alternatively identify it with Mahalliba, known from the annals of the Assyrian king Sennacherib, who conquered it during his campaign of 701 BC. The coastal Phoenician region where Mahalab was located has been extensively studied, revealing continuous habitation from the Bronze Age onward. The area's proximity to Tyre and Sidon placed it within one of the ancient world's most prosperous trading networks. Limited survey work has documented pottery from multiple periods at the site.
