Nebo
Nebo is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Transjordan in modern-day Israel. Known today as Khirbet al Mukhayyat. It appears across 7 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
Nebo in Transjordan, identified with Khirbet al-Mukhayyat, was a city in the territory of Reuben east of the Jordan River. It first appears in Numbers 32:3 and 32:38 when the tribes of Reuben and Gad requested the fertile Transjordanian territories for their livestock. Moses granted their request on the condition that their warriors would cross the Jordan to help conquer Canaan. The Reubenites rebuilt Nebo among other cities, renaming them (Numbers 32:38). In the ninth century BC, the Moabite Stone (Mesha Stele) records King Mesha's capture of Nebo from Israel, describing how he slaughtered its inhabitants as a devotion to the Moabite god Chemosh. The prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah later pronounced oracles against Moab that specifically mention Nebo's destruction (Isaiah 15:2; Jeremiah 48:1, 22). These prophetic judgments underscore God's sovereignty over all nations. Nebo's history traces a pattern of contested territory: promised to Israel, rebuilt by Reuben, seized by Moab, and ultimately judged by God through prophetic decree.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Nebo in Transjordan is identified with Khirbet al-Mukhayyat, located approximately 10 kilometers west of Madaba in modern Jordan, near the more famous Mount Nebo. Archaeological investigations have uncovered remains from the Iron Age, including fortifications and domestic structures. The site is distinct from, though near, Mount Nebo (Jebel en-Neba), from which Moses viewed the Promised Land. The Mesha Stele (discovered in 1868 at Dhiban) provides dramatic extra-biblical confirmation of Nebo's existence and its capture by Moab around 840 BC. Byzantine-era churches with well-preserved mosaic floors have been excavated at Khirbet al-Mukhayyat, indicating continued habitation into the Christian period. The site is accessible to visitors today as part of the Mount Nebo archaeological area.
