Shimron-meron
Shimron-meron is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Galilee in modern-day Israel. Known today as Tel Shimron. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.
Biblical History
Shimron-meron appears only once in the Old Testament, in Joshua 12:20, in the list of Canaanite kings conquered by Joshua east and west of the Jordan. It is enumerated between Achshaph and Taanach in this victory catalog, placing it in the lower Galilee/Jezreel Valley region. Most scholars understand Shimron-meron as a compound form of the city name Shimron with the addition of "meron," possibly to distinguish it from other places bearing similar names or to specify a particular variant or district of Shimron. Alternatively, some interpreters see Shimron and Shimron-meron as two distinct settlements. The meron element may connect the city to the waters of Merom, the site of Joshua's climactic northern battle (Joshua 11:5), though this linkage is debated. The victory over the king of Shimron-meron is part of the comprehensive list of thirty-one Canaanite kings defeated in Joshua's campaigns — a literary summary affirming the totality of Israel's God-given conquest even as the narrative acknowledges that much land remained to be fully possessed. The city's allotment to Zebulun reflects the broader settlement of the Galilee region by the northern tribes.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Shimron-meron is generally equated with Shimron and identified with Tel Shimron (Tel Samuniyeh) in the Jezreel Valley. Recent excavations at Tel Shimron by the Tel Shimron Excavation Project have produced significant Bronze Age and Iron Age remains, including a large Late Bronze Age administrative building complex with Egyptian connections and evidence of a major Canaanite city-state consistent with the biblical account. Whether Shimron and Shimron-meron were a single city or two distinct sites is unresolved. The meron element has led some to propose associations with Jebel Marun or Meiron in upper Galilee, but geographical context within the Jezreel-Galilee boundary lists favors the Tel Shimron identification for Shimron-meron as well.
