Biblical History
Syria, known in the Hebrew Bible as Aram, plays a recurring and significant role throughout the Old and New Testaments. In the New Testament, Syria appears as a Roman administrative province encompassing much of the Levant north of Judea, with Damascus as its preeminent city. It is mentioned in the context of Jesus' early ministry, when his fame spread throughout "all Syria" (Matthew 4:24), and in Paul's early post-conversion period, when he went to Arabia before returning to Damascus, the Syrian capital (Galatians 1:17). The province of Syria-Cilicia was familiar territory for Paul, who passed through it during his missionary journeys (Acts 15:41). In the broader biblical story, the Aramean kingdom of Damascus was one of Israel's most persistent adversaries and occasional allies during the monarchy period, with figures such as Ben-hadad and Hazael conducting major military campaigns against both Israel and Judah. The Aramean people and language left deep impressions on Israelite culture, and Aramaic eventually became the lingua franca of the entire ancient Near East, the language in which portions of Daniel and Ezra were written and in which Jesus himself likely conversed.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Ancient Syria encompasses one of the world's most archaeologically rich regions. Damascus, among the oldest continuously inhabited cities, preserves layers of occupation from the Bronze Age forward, though urban continuity limits systematic excavation. Major archaeological sites in greater Syria include Ebla (Tell Mardikh), whose 3rd-millennium BC palace archive of cuneiform tablets transformed understanding of ancient Near Eastern civilization; Mari (Tell Hariri) on the Euphrates; and Ugarit (Ras Shamra), which yielded the Ugaritic alphabet and Canaanite mythological texts crucial for understanding Hebrew literature. Roman-era Palmyra (ancient Tadmor) preserves spectacular temple and colonnaded street remains. The region's archaeological heritage has suffered significant damage in recent decades due to conflict.
