Tabor
Tabor is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Galilee in modern-day Israel. Known today as Iksal. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.
Biblical History
The city of Tabor, distinct from the famous mountain of the same name, appears in the Old Testament in the context of the tribal allotment of Zebulun. In 1 Chronicles 6:77, Tabor is listed among the cities given to the Levites from the tribe of Zebulun as part of the divinely ordained system of Levitical towns distributed throughout Israel's tribal territories. This Levitical designation reflects the theological principle that the tribe consecrated to priestly and cultic service should have dwelling places dispersed among all the tribes, ensuring that the worship of the LORD would be maintained throughout the land. The modern site is commonly identified with Iksal, a village situated at the northwestern foot of Mount Tabor in the Jezreel Valley region. While the city receives only this single direct reference in Scripture, its status as a Levitical city underscores the administrative and religious organization of the early Israelite settlement period. The proximity to the mountain of Tabor may suggest that the city served as a community associated with the broader cultural significance of that landmark in the tribal territories of Galilee.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
The identification of biblical Tabor the city with modern Iksal at the foot of Mount Tabor is largely based on geographic proximity and the preservation of a similar-sounding name in the Arabic toponym. Iksal itself has not been subjected to systematic large-scale archaeological excavation, though surface surveys have recorded pottery from Iron Age periods, which would be consistent with occupation during the era of Israelite settlement and the monarchy. The Jezreel Valley and its surrounding foothills have been extensively surveyed, and multiple sites in the region show evidence of Levitical-period habitation, though specific architectural remains definitively linked to Tabor the Levitical city have not been identified.
