Valley of Aijalon
Valley of Aijalon is a location mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Ayalon Valley. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.
Biblical History
The Valley of Aijalon is forever associated with one of the most dramatic moments in Israelite military history. During Joshua's campaign to defend the Gibeonites from the coalition of five Amorite kings, the battle raged across the hills of Canaan. As the Israelites pursued their fleeing enemies, Joshua uttered a remarkable prayer-command: "Sun, stand still over Gibeon, and moon, over the Valley of Aijalon" (Joshua 10:12). According to the text, the sun halted and the moon stood still until Israel had taken vengeance on its enemies. This event, recorded also in the Book of Jashar, underscored the theological conviction that God was fighting for Israel. The valley itself served as the geographic backdrop for the moon's miraculous suspension, framing the supernatural as intimately connected to real landscape. Later, Aijalon appears as a Levitical city assigned to the Kohathites (1 Chronicles 6:69) and was contested between the tribes of Dan and Ephraim. It lay along a critical corridor into the Judean hills, making it a perennial military flashpoint throughout the period of the Judges and the monarchy.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
The Valley of Aijalon corresponds to the modern Ayalon Valley (also spelled Ajalon), a broad lowland corridor in the foothills of the Shephelah west of Jerusalem, through which major ancient roads ran from the coastal plain into the Judean highlands. The site is well attested geographically, and the modern city of Modi'in sits at its eastern approach. Archaeological surveys have revealed Bronze and Iron Age settlements throughout the valley, reflecting its long habitation as an agricultural and transit corridor. The valley's strategic importance is confirmed by its recurring appearance in Egyptian, Assyrian, and later Roman military accounts of campaigns through Canaan.
