Colossae is an ancient city mentioned in the New Testament, located in the region of Asia Minor in modern-day Turkey. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.

Biblical History

Colossae was an ancient city in the Lycus Valley of Asia Minor, best known in the New Testament as the recipient of Paul's letter to the Colossians. The city is mentioned explicitly in Colossians 1:2, where Paul addresses the holy and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae. Though Paul had apparently not visited Colossae personally (Colossians 2:1), the church there was founded through the ministry of Epaphras, whom Paul calls a faithful minister of Christ on their behalf (Colossians 1:7). Paul's letter confronts a dangerous teaching combining Jewish legal observances with a form of angel veneration or proto-Gnostic philosophy, responding with a sweeping declaration of Christ's supremacy over all principalities and powers (Colossians 1:15-20). The letter also mentions Philemon and the slave Onesimus in connection with Colossae. The congregation at Colossae was likely to share correspondence with the neighboring churches at Laodicea (Colossians 4:16), reflecting the networked character of early Pauline Christianity in Asia Minor.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

Colossae's mound, near the modern Turkish village of Honaz, remains largely unexcavated — a remarkable fact given its New Testament significance. Surface surveys have confirmed the site's extent and yielded pottery and coins spanning the Bronze Age through the Byzantine period. The city reached its peak prosperity in the Achaemenid and early Hellenistic periods, when it was a major center for wool dyeing and textile production. The distinctive purple-dyed wool of Colossae was celebrated in antiquity. By the Roman imperial period the city had been overshadowed by nearby Hierapolis and Laodicea. Plans for formal excavation have been discussed by Turkish and international scholars in recent decades.
