Zion
Zion is an ancient city mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Jerusalem. It appears across 148 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
Zion is one of the most theologically resonant place names in all of Scripture, appearing across both Testaments with an expanding range of meaning. Originally designating the Jebusite stronghold captured by David (2 Samuel 5:7), the "City of David," Zion became the focal point of Israelite worship when the ark of the covenant was brought there in triumph (2 Samuel 6). With Solomon's construction of the temple on the adjacent Mount Moriah, Zion extended in meaning to encompass the entire temple mount and ultimately Jerusalem itself. The Psalms are saturated with Zion theology, celebrating it as God's chosen dwelling place (Psalm 132:13-14) and the city from which he reigns (Psalm 2:6; 48:1-2). The prophets looked to Zion as the center of eschatological hope — the place from which God's law would go forth (Isaiah 2:3) and to which the nations would stream (Isaiah 60). In the New Testament, Zion becomes a metaphor for the heavenly Jerusalem and the community of the redeemed (Hebrews 12:22; Revelation 14:1), embodying the ultimate fulfillment of God's covenant promises.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
The original City of David, identified with the biblical Zion, occupies a narrow ridge south of the current Old City walls, above the Kidron Valley. Extensive excavations since the 19th century, and especially the ongoing City of David Archaeological Park under the direction of Eilat Mazar and subsequent teams, have revealed monumental Iron Age structures, including a large stone stepped structure and potentially the palace of David himself. The Siloam Tunnel, carved under King Hezekiah (2 Kings 20:20), remains a landmark discovery. Ongoing excavations continue to reveal Iron Age II and earlier remains, consistently affirming the antiquity and significance of Jerusalem as a major urban center throughout the biblical period.
