Dilean is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Coastal Plain in modern-day Israel. Known today as Tel Nagila. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.

Biblical History

Dilean appears solely in Joshua 15:38, listed among the cities of Judah in the Shephelah (lowland) district, grouped with Migdal-gad, Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon, Cabbon, Lahmas, Kitlish, Gederoth, Beth-dagon, Naamah, and Makkedah — fourteen cities with their villages. As with many of the towns in these administrative lists, Dilean plays no independent narrative role in the biblical account; it is preserved as a record of the settled communities within Judah's tribal inheritance. The city's location in the Shephelah placed it in one of the most contested and agriculturally productive zones in ancient Canaan, a natural corridor between the coastal plain and the Judean hill country that was frequently traversed by armies and merchants. The Shephelah district lists in Joshua 15 are generally regarded by scholars as reflecting genuine administrative records, possibly originating in the era of the united or early divided monarchy, indicating that Dilean was a functioning settlement within the organizational life of the tribe of Judah.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

Dilean is tentatively identified with Tel Nagila, located in the northern Negev foothills at the edge of the Shephelah in southern Israel. Tel Nagila was excavated by Ruth Amiran and Aharoni Miriam in 1962–63, revealing occupation from the Chalcolithic through the Middle Bronze Age, with evidence of Hyksos-period occupation and a large mudbrick palace. However, Iron Age occupation at the site is less clearly attested, which has led some scholars to question the identification with Dilean. Other proposed identifications include sites in the surrounding region. The precise location of biblical Dilean remains uncertain, and the identification with Tel Nagila should be regarded as provisional.
