Idalah is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Galilee in modern-day Israel. Known today as Khirbet el Huwarah. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.

Biblical History

Idalah is a town listed among the cities allotted to the tribe of Zebulun in the division of the Promised Land, as recorded in Joshua 19:15. It appears alongside Kattath, Nahalal, Shimron, and Bethlehem (a different Bethlehem from the more famous one in Judah) in Zebulun's territorial inventory. Though mentioned only once in Scripture, Idalah's placement within Zebulun positions it in the fertile region of lower Galilee, an area that would become deeply significant in the unfolding story of salvation. Zebulun's territory stretched from the Jezreel Valley northward into the Galilean hills, a crossroads region connecting the coastal plain to the inland trade routes. Jacob's blessing over Zebulun described the tribe as dwelling by the seashore and becoming a haven for ships (Genesis 49:13), reflecting the commercial potential of its location. The prophet Isaiah foretold that the land of Zebulun would see a great light (Isaiah 9:1), a promise fulfilled when Jesus conducted much of his ministry in this very region, bringing the gospel to the towns and villages of Galilee.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

Idalah has been identified with Khirbet el-Huwarah (also written Horvat Huwarah), a site located in the hills of lower Galilee south of the Beit Netofa Valley, approximately ten kilometers west of Nazareth. The identification is based on geographical considerations and the sequence of towns listed in Joshua 19:15. Surface surveys at the site have recovered pottery from the Iron Age and later periods, supporting occupation during the period of Israelite settlement. The site is a relatively modest tell in an agricultural landscape. No major excavation has been conducted at Khirbet el-Huwarah, and the identification with Idalah, while plausible, remains tentative. The surrounding region preserves the rolling, fertile terrain characteristic of lower Galilee.
