Understanding Biblical Intent
In biblical thought, 'intent' represents more than casual thinking—it signifies deliberate purpose, conscious direction of the will, and the underlying motivation behind actions. Unlike modern usage that sometimes separates intention from action, Scripture consistently presents intent as the spiritual and moral foundation from which behavior flows. Jesus emphasized this connection when he taught that anger equates to murder in the heart and lust equates to adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:21-28), establishing that God judges not only actions but the intentions behind them.
Human Intent in Biblical Narrative
Human intent appears throughout Scripture as a measure of moral and spiritual condition. Positive examples include the Israelites' commitment to seek God with all their heart and soul (Deuteronomy 4:29) and David's determination to build a temple for God (1 Kings 8:17-18). Negative examples abound, such as Pharaoh's hardened heart (Exodus 8:15), the deceptive intentions of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11), and the religious leaders who plotted against Jesus (Matthew 26:3-4). The book of Proverbs repeatedly warns about wicked intentions (Proverbs 6:18) while encouraging pure motives (Proverbs 16:3).

God's intentions form a central theme throughout Scripture, revealing His purposeful nature. From creation's design (Genesis 1:1-31) to redemption's plan (Ephesians 1:3-14), God acts with specific intentions. The prophet Jeremiah records God's declaration: "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope" (Jeremiah 29:11). Yet genuine faith produces transformed intentions, as believers are "created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand" (Ephesians 2:10).
