Kishon is a river mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Galilee in modern-day Israel. Known today as Kishon River. It appears across 5 verses in Scripture.

Biblical History

The Kishon River holds a dramatic place in biblical history as the site of one of Israel's most celebrated military victories. The river first appears in the account of Deborah and Barak's battle against the Canaanite general Sisera and his nine hundred iron chariots (Judges 4-5). As prophesied by Deborah, the Lord routed Sisera's forces, and the swollen Kishon swept away the fleeing army: "The river Kishon swept them away, the ancient river, the river Kishon" (Judges 5:21). This victory, celebrated in Deborah's Song (Judges 5), became one of Israel's foundational stories of divine deliverance. The Kishon appears again in 1 Kings 18:40, when Elijah, after his dramatic confrontation with the prophets of Baal on nearby Mount Carmel, brought the four hundred and fifty false prophets down to the Kishon River and executed them there. Psalm 83:9 later invokes the memory of Sisera's defeat at the Kishon as a prayer for God to similarly vanquish Israel's enemies. The river thus symbolizes God's power to overthrow seemingly invincible foes.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

The Kishon River (Nahal Qishon) is a perennial stream flowing approximately 70 kilometers through the Jezreel Valley before emptying into the Mediterranean Sea near modern Haifa. It is the principal drainage system of the Jezreel Valley and the largest river system in northern Israel after the Jordan. Archaeological surveys along its course have documented numerous settlement sites from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The river's tendency to flood during heavy rains, transforming the surrounding plain into marshland, provides the geographical backdrop for understanding how Sisera's chariots became mired during the battle described in Judges 4-5. Today the Kishon flows through an industrial zone near Haifa and has been the subject of environmental remediation efforts. The river's banks near Tell el-Qasis have yielded Iron Age remains.
