Mesha is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Arabia in modern-day Iraq. Known today as Massa. It appears across 1 verse in Scripture.

Biblical History

Mesha appears in Genesis 10:30 as one of the boundary markers defining the territory inhabited by the sons of Joktan, the descendants of Shem: "The territory in which they lived extended from Mesha in the direction of Sephar to the hill country of the east." This geographic notice in the Table of Nations places Mesha at one extremity of the Arabian settlements of the Joktanite peoples, who are traditionally associated with the tribes of southern and eastern Arabia. The Joktanites included notable groups such as Sheba and Havilah, whose descendants became prominent in the spice and incense trade of the ancient Near East. Mesha thus serves in Scripture as a geographic boundary marker for the post-Flood dispersion of nations, anchoring the Joktanite settlements within the broader framework of Genesis 10's ethnographic map. While Mesha itself plays no further narrative role in Scripture, its mention in the Table of Nations reflects the biblical concern to trace the origins and territories of all peoples back to Noah's descendants, placing even distant Arabian settlements within the scope of God's sovereign ordering of the nations.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

The identification of biblical Mesha with the Arabian location of Massa remains highly speculative. Some scholars have connected it with the Massa tribe mentioned in Assyrian records as dwelling in northern Arabia. Others have proposed locations further south along the Arabian Peninsula. The site tentatively identified as Massa lies in the desert region of modern-day Saudi Arabia, an area that was historically significant for caravan trade routes connecting southern Arabia with Mesopotamia. Archaeological exploration of this remote area has been limited, and no definitive identification of biblical Mesha has been established. The broader region shows evidence of ancient habitation and trade activity consistent with the Joktanite settlements described in Genesis 10.
