Naioth
Naioth is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Al Ram. It appears across 6 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
Naioth in Ramah appears in the dramatic narrative of David's flight from King Saul in 1 Samuel 19:18-24 and 20:1. After Jonathan warned David of Saul's murderous intent, David fled to Samuel at Naioth in Ramah, where the prophet apparently presided over a community of prophets. When Saul sent messengers to seize David, each group that arrived was overcome by the Spirit of God and began prophesying. Saul himself then traveled to Naioth, and upon arriving, the Spirit of God came upon him as well, causing him to strip off his royal garments and prophesy before Samuel all day and night. This extraordinary episode gave rise to the proverb, "Is Saul also among the prophets?" (1 Samuel 19:24). Naioth thus became a place where God's sovereign protection of His anointed future king was dramatically displayed. The name Naioth likely means "dwellings" or "habitations," suggesting it was a quarter or district within Ramah rather than a separate town, possibly a compound where Samuel's prophetic school resided and where sacred instruction was given.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
The precise location of Naioth remains uncertain, as it appears to be a district or neighborhood within Ramah rather than an independent settlement. Ramah itself is commonly identified with er-Ram (modern Al Ram), located about five miles north of Jerusalem. Some scholars have alternatively proposed Ramallah or nearby sites. Archaeological surveys at er-Ram have uncovered Iron Age pottery and building remains consistent with the period of Samuel and Saul. However, no specific structure has been identified as Naioth or Samuel's prophetic community. The area today is a developed Palestinian town in the West Bank, making extensive archaeological excavation difficult.
