Nile
Nile is a river mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments, located in the region of Egypt in modern-day Egypt. Known today as Nile River. It appears across 45 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
The Nile, referred to in Hebrew as "Ye'or," stands as one of Scripture's most prominent geographical features, appearing across approximately 45 verses. It first gains significance in the Joseph narrative, where Pharaoh dreams of seven fat and seven lean cows emerging from the Nile (Genesis 41:1-3), a vision that sets in motion Israel's migration to Egypt. The river becomes central to the Exodus story: the infant Moses is placed in a basket among its reeds (Exodus 2:3), and God's first plague transforms the Nile's waters to blood (Exodus 7:17-20), striking at the heart of Egypt's sustenance and religious life, as the Egyptians venerated the river as divine. The prophets repeatedly invoke the Nile as a symbol of Egyptian power and pride. Isaiah prophesies the drying up of the Nile as divine judgment (Isaiah 19:5-7), and Ezekiel addresses Pharaoh as "the great monster lying in the midst of his rivers" (Ezekiel 29:3). The river thus represents both provision and the false security of worldly power throughout biblical theology.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
The Nile River, the longest river in Africa at approximately 6,650 kilometers, remains the lifeline of modern Egypt just as it was in antiquity. Archaeological discoveries along the Nile Valley have been extraordinary, including the temples at Luxor and Karnak, the pyramids at Giza, and countless artifacts from every period of Egyptian civilization. The annual Nile flood cycle, which deposited fertile silt across the floodplain, shaped the agricultural calendar that supported one of the ancient world's most advanced civilizations. The construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s ended the natural flood cycle and necessitated the UNESCO-led rescue of monuments like Abu Simbel. The Nile Delta region remains one of the most densely populated areas in the world.
