Rephidim
Rephidim is a location mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Sinai in modern-day Egypt. Known today as Wadi Rufaiyil. It appears across 5 verses in Scripture.
Biblical History
Rephidim was a significant stopping point during Israel's wilderness journey from Egypt to Sinai, mentioned in Exodus 17 and Numbers 33:14-15. It was here that two pivotal events occurred. First, the people quarreled with Moses over the lack of water, and God instructed Moses to strike the rock at Horeb, from which water miraculously flowed (Exodus 17:1-7). Moses named the place Massah and Meribah, meaning 'testing' and 'quarreling,' memorializing Israel's lack of faith. Second, the Amalekites attacked Israel at Rephidim, prompting the first military engagement in Israel's history as a nation (Exodus 17:8-16). During the battle, Moses held up the staff of God on a hilltop; when his hands grew weary, Aaron and Hur supported them until Joshua secured victory. God then declared perpetual war against Amalek. Rephidim thus encapsulates two foundational themes of the wilderness narrative: God's provision in the face of human complaint, and divine empowerment in the face of external threat. The Israelites departed Rephidim for the wilderness of Sinai, where they would receive the covenant.
Archaeological & Historical Notes
Rephidim is traditionally identified with Wadi Rufaiyil (also spelled Feiran), a broad valley in the southwestern Sinai Peninsula of modern Egypt. This wadi is one of the largest and most fertile in the Sinai, fed by seasonal streams that support date palms and other vegetation, making it a natural gathering point for travelers and pastoral groups. The nearby oasis of Feiran was the site of an early Christian bishopric, and ruins of churches and hermitages from the Byzantine period remain visible. Some scholars have proposed alternative locations based on different reconstructions of the Exodus route. The harsh granite landscape of the region, with its dramatic rock formations and narrow valleys, accords with the biblical description of a challenging wilderness environment.
