Shur is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Sinai in modern-day Egypt. Known today as Ar Ruwaysat. It appears across 6 verses in Scripture.

Biblical History

Shur was a wilderness region on the northeastern frontier of Egypt, stretching from the Sinai Peninsula toward Canaan. Its name, meaning "wall" in Hebrew, may refer to a line of Egyptian frontier fortifications designed to control movement into and out of Egypt. Shur first appears in Scripture in Genesis 16:7, where the angel of the LORD finds Hagar beside a spring on the road to Shur after she fled from Sarai's harsh treatment — a poignant moment in which God's concern for the marginalized is expressed. Abraham also dwelt between Kadesh and Shur (Genesis 20:1), and when he defeated the coalition of kings he pursued them as far as Hobah north of Damascus, suggesting Shur marked a recognized geographic boundary. After the Exodus, Israel entered the Wilderness of Shur immediately upon crossing the Red Sea (Exodus 15:22), traveling three days without finding water before reaching Marah. The Amalekites and other desert peoples inhabited Shur's borderlands (1 Samuel 15:7; 27:8), making it a zone of recurring conflict in Israel's early history and a liminal space where encounters with God and enemies alike took shape.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

The Wilderness of Shur is generally identified with the northwestern portion of the Sinai Peninsula, particularly the region east of the Suez Canal and south of the Mediterranean coastal route. Some scholars associate it with the area around Wadi el-Arish or modern Bir el-Abd. Egyptian texts refer to a "Wall of the Ruler," a series of fortified posts along this frontier, which may correspond to the Hebrew name Shur. Archaeological surveys in the northern Sinai have uncovered Egyptian administrative posts and fort sites from the Late Bronze Age along the coastal military road, reflecting Egypt's intense interest in controlling this frontier zone. The identification of Ar Ruwaysat near Ismailia has been proposed but remains debated among geographers.
