Zoan is an ancient city mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Egypt in modern-day Egypt. Known today as Tanis. It appears across 7 verses in Scripture.

Biblical History

Zoan was one of the most significant cities of ancient Egypt, appearing multiple times in the Old Testament as a symbol of Egyptian power and wisdom. Numbers 13:22 notes that Zoan was built seven years after Hebron, a reference suggesting great antiquity. The city figures prominently in the Exodus tradition: Psalm 78:12, 43 specifically identifies the "field of Zoan" as the region where God performed his wonders and signs before Pharaoh, suggesting it served as a royal residence during the period of Israel's enslavement. Isaiah 19:11, 13 and 30:4 invoke Zoan as a seat of Egyptian counsel, mocking its princes as foolish and helpless before God's judgment. Ezekiel 30:14 includes Zoan among the cities that will be devastated when God executes judgment on Egypt. The city's repeated appearance in prophetic condemnation reflects its prominence as a center of Egyptian royal and administrative power, particularly during the era of the Hyksos and later the Ramesside dynasties. For the biblical writers, Zoan embodied the worldly wisdom and imperial pride that stand in contrast to the wisdom that comes from God.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

Zoan is identified with Tanis (San el-Hagar) in the northeastern Nile Delta, one of the most extensively excavated sites in Egypt. French excavations since the 19th century, led notably by Auguste Mariette and later Pierre Montet, revealed massive temple complexes, royal tombs of the 21st and 22nd Dynasties, and extraordinary royal treasure comparable to that of Tutankhamun. Montet's discoveries of intact royal burials in 1939-1940 were among the most significant finds in Egyptian archaeology. The site preserves colossal statuary and numerous royal inscriptions. Tanis served as the capital of Egypt during the Third Intermediate Period, confirming its status as a royal center consistent with the biblical portrayal of Zoan.
