Valley Gate is a structure mentioned in the Old Testament, located in the region of Judea in modern-day Israel. Known today as Jerusalem. It appears across 4 verses in Scripture.

Biblical History

The Valley Gate was one of the gates of ancient Jerusalem, mentioned primarily in the book of Nehemiah in the context of the great wall-rebuilding project following the return from Babylonian exile. Nehemiah 2:13 records that Nehemiah, making his famous night inspection of Jerusalem's broken walls, went out by the Valley Gate and turned toward the Dung Gate and the Fountain Gate. This nighttime survey was the decisive reconnaissance mission that led Nehemiah to mobilize the community for the rebuilding effort. In Nehemiah 3:13, the Valley Gate is assigned to Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah for repair, covering a stretch of five hundred cubits of wall extending to the Dung Gate. The gate is mentioned again in Nehemiah 3:19. Its name reflects its orientation toward a valley — most likely the Hinnom Valley or the Central (Tyropoeon) Valley on Jerusalem's western or southwestern side. The Valley Gate thus stands as a symbol of renewal and restoration, a threshold through which Nehemiah passed in the darkness before dawn as he assessed the city's ruin and resolved to rebuild what had been broken down by exile and neglect.

Archaeological & Historical Notes

The Valley Gate of Jerusalem is generally located along the western or southwestern wall of the pre-exilic and post-exilic city, overlooking the Hinnom Valley. Archaeological work in Jerusalem, particularly in the Jewish Quarter and along the western hill, has identified wall segments, towers, and gate complexes from the Iron Age II and Persian periods that may relate to Nehemiah's reconstruction. Kathleen Kenyon's excavations on the eastern ridge and subsequent work by Yigal Shiloh and others have clarified Jerusalem's ancient topography. The precise gate structure associated with the Valley Gate has not been definitively identified and excavated, but the general area is consistent with the topographical description provided in Nehemiah.
