The Synoptics place this cleansing in Passion Week, while John records one early in Jesus's ministry (John 2:13-25). Scholars debate whether there were two cleansings or one event placed differently for theological reasons. Mark uniquely adds that Jesus "would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple," suggesting he briefly took physical control of the temple courts.
