About

A 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage temple designed as a colossal stone chariot of the sun god Surya, with 24 intricately carved wheels and seven horse sculptures pulling it eastward.

Significance

Built by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty as a tribute to Surya, the temple represents solar worship at its architectural apex; it was called the 'Black Pagoda' by European sailors.
