Lumbini
Location
About
A garden and archaeological zone in the Terai lowlands of Nepal, Lumbini is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha), born around 563 BCE. The Maya Devi Temple marks the traditional birth spot confirmed by Emperor Ashoka's pillar inscription of 249 BCE — the earliest dated monument in South Asian history. The UNESCO World Heritage Site contains the sacred pool, the Ashoka Pillar, and the birth marker stone.
Significance
Lumbini is the only place on earth whose connection to the Buddha has been confirmed archaeologically through inscription — Ashoka's pillar explicitly states 'Here the Blessed One was born.' The site is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites designated by the Buddha himself (along with Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinagar). The birth story — the miraculous birth from his mother's side under the sal tree — is depicted in Buddhist art across Asia.
