One of three medieval mosques in Timbuktu (with Djinguereber and Sidi Yahia), Sankore served as the center of the University of Sankore — a 15th–16th century hub of Islamic scholarship that rivaled Cairo and Baghdad.
Significance
At its height the University of Sankore enrolled up to 25,000 students and accumulated hundreds of thousands of manuscripts; it symbolizes the deep roots of Islamic learning in West Africa.
