Gary Habermas
Philosopher, resurrection evidence specialist
About Gary Habermas
Gary Habermas is Distinguished Research Professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy and Theology at Liberty University. He holds a PhD from Michigan State University and is recognized internationally as the leading academic specialist on the historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Habermas has catalogued and analyzed more than 3,400 scholarly sources on the resurrection in multiple languages, producing what he calls the "minimal facts" approach: a method of arguing for the resurrection using only those data points granted by a broad consensus of critical scholars regardless of theological orientation.
His YouTube channel hosts lectures, interviews, and conference presentations concentrating almost exclusively on the resurrection, early Christology, and related historical questions. The channel's verse profile reflects this focus with extraordinary concentration: 1 Corinthians 15, Romans 10, Galatians 1 and 2, and the early pre-Pauline creeds dominate. Videos regularly address topics such as the early creedal tradition of 1 Corinthians 15:3-7, post-resurrection appearances, the conversion of Paul and James, near-death experience research, and the management of spiritual doubt.
Scholarly Significance
Habermas occupies an unusual position: he publishes in peer-reviewed philosophical and historical journals while remaining committed to evangelical Christian faith. His debates with atheist philosophers such as Anthony Flew (who later became a deist partly due to Habermas's arguments) and his collaboration with Michael Licona have shaped contemporary Christian apologetics substantially. The channel is an essential resource for anyone studying the academic case for the resurrection, whether as a believer, skeptic, or scholar.
