1 CorinthiansChapter 16
1 Corinthians Chapter 16: Meaning
Paul gives instructions for an offering, shares his travel plans, and closes with warm greetings.
Summary
Paul starts by telling the church how to collect money for believers in Jerusalem who were in need. He says each person should set aside some money every Sunday, based on how much they have. When Paul arrives, he will send trusted people to carry that gift to Jerusalem.
Next, Paul shares his travel plans. He is in Ephesus and will travel through Macedonia before coming to visit them. He hopes to stay with them for a while. He mentions that a great opportunity to share the gospel has opened up where he is, even though many people oppose him. He also asks the church to welcome Timothy kindly and not look down on him.
Paul closes the letter with important reminders. He tells them to stay alert, stand firm in their faith, be brave, and be strong. But he says everything must be done with love. He thanks some men, Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus, who had come to visit him and been a great help. Finally, he sends greetings from other churches and believers, including Aquila and Prisca. He closes with a warning for anyone who does not love the Lord, then prays for God's grace to be with them all.
Historical Context
Paul wrote this letter from Ephesus, a large city on the western coast of modern-day Turkey. The city of Jerusalem had many believers who were struggling with poverty. Paul was collecting money from churches across different regions to send to them. This was a big deal because it showed that believers from different backgrounds and places were one family.
The word "Maranatha" that Paul uses at the end means "Come, Lord" in Aramaic. It shows how much early Christians longed for Jesus to return. This ending makes a powerful close to a long letter full of important instructions for the church.
