1 EsdrasChapter 2
1 Esdras Chapter 2: Meaning
King Cyrus lets the Jews go home, but enemies write a letter to stop the temple being rebuilt.
Summary
God stirred the heart of Cyrus, the king of Persia, and Cyrus made an announcement: any Jewish person in his kingdom could go back to Jerusalem and rebuild God's temple. Cyrus even gave back all the gold and silver cups and bowls that Nebuchadnezzar had stolen from the temple long ago. Thousands of these holy objects were counted and sent back.
But not everyone was happy about the Jews returning. Some local officials in the area wrote a letter to King Artaxerxes warning him that Jerusalem had always been a troublemaking city. They said if the walls were rebuilt, the people would stop paying taxes and might even rebel against the king.
King Artaxerxes believed the letter. He ordered the work to stop right away. Soldiers came to Jerusalem and forced the builders to quit. The temple construction stopped completely and stayed stopped until King Darius came to power.
Historical Context
This chapter takes place around 538 BC, after the Persian Empire defeated Babylon. Persia was now the most powerful empire in the world, and its kings controlled what happened in lands like Judah. God had promised through the prophet Jeremiah that his people would return after seventy years, and Cyrus's decree was exactly how that came true.
The enemies writing to stop the temple were people living in the region who did not want the Jews to have power again. Political scheming and false reports could easily influence kings in those days, which shows how hard it could be to do the right thing even when a good plan was underway.
