1 EsdrasChapter 3

1 Esdras Chapter 3: Meaning

Three young guards compete to name the strongest thing in the world before King Darius.

Summary
King Darius of Persia threw a huge feast for all his important guests. After everyone went home and the king fell asleep, three young men who were part of his personal bodyguard came up with a fun contest. Each one would write down what he thought was the strongest thing in the world. When the king woke up, he would read their answers and judge who gave the best one. They put their answers under the king's pillow. The first guard wrote that wine is the strongest. The second wrote that the king is the strongest. The third wrote that women are the strongest, but above everything, truth wins. The king called them all together in front of his nobles and asked each one to explain his answer. The first young man stood up and made his case for wine. He said wine makes everyone equal, it causes kings and ordinary people to think and act the same way. It makes people forget their troubles, but it also makes them forget themselves and even fight. He sat down after his speech, and the second young man prepared to give his answer.
