1 Esdras Chapter 6: Meaning

Prophets inspire the Jews to resume building, and King Darius confirms Cyrus's decree to help them.

Summary
In the second year of King Darius's reign, the prophets Haggai and Zechariah encouraged the Jewish people to get back to work on God's temple. Zerubbabel and Jeshua led the effort and began building again. God was watching over them and the work moved forward. But the local governor Sisinnes came to Jerusalem and asked: who gave you permission to build this? He wrote a letter to King Darius asking what to do. The Jewish elders replied to him by explaining the whole story, how Solomon built the temple, how it was destroyed, how Cyrus had given the command to rebuild it, and how the work had begun under Zerubbabel. Darius had his officials search the royal records. They found a scroll in the treasury at Ecbatana that confirmed everything, Cyrus really had issued the decree to rebuild God's house in Jerusalem. The scroll even listed the building's size and said the costs should come from the royal treasury. Darius wrote back with strong orders. He told the governor and his officials to stay away from the building site and let the Jews continue. He also commanded that money and supplies, including animals for sacrifices, be provided regularly from the taxes of that region. Anyone who tried to stop or damage the Lord's house would face very harsh punishment.

Historical Context

This chapter takes place around 520 BC when King Darius I ruled Persia. The temple rebuilding had been stopped for years by local opposition and a royal order. Now two prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, called the people back to action, and their messages are still found in the Bible today.

The discovery of Cyrus's original decree in the royal archives was very important. It proved the Jews had legal permission to rebuild. In the ancient world, royal decrees carried enormous authority, and Darius's decision to honor Cyrus's order and add his own support changed everything for the Jewish community.
