1 EsdrasChapter 7

1 Esdras Chapter 7: Meaning

The temple is finished and the people celebrate with sacrifices, Passover, and great joy.

Summary
The local governor Sisinnes and his officials obeyed King Darius's orders and helped the Jewish leaders continue building. With the prophets Haggai and Zechariah still encouraging the people, the work went smoothly. The temple was completed on the twenty-third day of the month of Adar, in the sixth year of King Darius's reign. The Israelites dedicated the temple with a big celebration. They offered hundreds of bulls, rams, and lambs as sacrifices, as well as twelve goats, one for each tribe of Israel. The priests and Levites put on their special clothes and took their posts. Everything was done exactly as the law of Moses said it should be. A short time later, the returned exiles celebrated Passover. The priests and Levites had all made themselves clean and pure together, so they were ready to kill the Passover lamb for everyone. All the Israelites who had come back from exile, and who had turned away from the sinful habits of the surrounding nations, shared in the Passover meal. They also kept the Festival of Unleavened Bread for seven days with great joy. They were grateful because God had changed the heart of the Persian king to support them and strengthen them in his work.

Historical Context

The temple was finished around 516 BC, exactly seventy years after the first one had been destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BC. This was not an accident. God had promised through the prophet Jeremiah that the land would rest for seventy years, and now that time was up.

The Passover celebration at the end of this chapter was the first one held in the newly rebuilt temple. It connected the people back to Moses and the original Passover in Egypt. After decades of exile and heartbreak, Israel was worshiping God again in their own land with their own temple.

What This Means Today

Finishing what we start — especially for God — is worth celebrating.
Celebrating big moments with worship reminds us who made those moments possible.
Getting right with God before taking part in worship matters, just like the Levites purifying themselves.
When we turn away from wrong habits, we can fully experience the joy God has for us.
God keeps his promises — seventy years later, the temple stood again, just as he said.
