1 MaccabeesChapter 11
1 Maccabees Chapter 11: Meaning
Kings fight over power, Jonathan wins favors from a new king, and Israel's soldiers save a city.
Summary
Egypt's king Ptolemy tricked his way into cities along the coast, pretending to be friendly. But he was really planning to steal Alexander's kingdom. He gave his daughter to Demetrius instead of Alexander and took over two kingdoms at once. Then Alexander was killed, and Demetrius became king.
Jonathan, the Jewish leader, went to meet Demetrius and brought him gifts. Even though some enemies tried to get Jonathan in trouble, the king treated Jonathan well. The king gave him tax breaks and extra land. But later, Demetrius broke all his promises and hurt Jonathan.
A man named Trypho brought back a young boy named Antiochus to take the throne. Demetrius's soldiers all switched sides to join the new king. The young king Antiochus gave Jonathan even more honor and made his brother Simon a commander.
Jonathan went on tour through many cities, winning people to his side. But he faced a trick attack near a place called Hazor. His troops ran away, but Jonathan prayed and fought back. He turned the battle around and won. About three thousand enemy soldiers died that day.
Historical Context
This chapter takes place around 145 BC, during a time when different kings were fighting over the land of Syria and the Middle East. The Jewish people were caught in the middle of these power struggles. Their leader Jonathan had to be smart about which king to support to keep Judea safe and free.
The Maccabee family had been fighting for years to protect the Jewish people and their right to follow God's laws. Jonathan kept making deals with foreign kings to protect his people. This was a dangerous job because kings would often make promises and then break them.
