1 MaccabeesChapter 12
1 Maccabees Chapter 12: Meaning
Jonathan makes peace with Rome and Sparta, then is tricked and captured by the enemy Trypho.
Summary
Jonathan sent messengers to Rome and Sparta to keep up friendly relationships. He wrote a letter to the Spartans saying the two nations were like brothers, both coming from Abraham. The Spartans had actually said this long ago in an old letter to a high priest named Onias. Jonathan wanted to stay connected to these powerful nations.
After handling the letters, Jonathan led his army to stop Demetrius's generals from attacking Judea. His smart strategy worked. The enemy troops were so scared they snuck away in the night. Jonathan then attacked some Arab raiders and kept moving through the land. His brother Simon captured and held the city of Joppa.
Back home, Jonathan and the elders planned to make Jerusalem stronger. They decided to raise the city walls higher and cut off the foreign soldiers stuck in the citadel. Simon also strengthened a city called Adida.
But a dangerous man named Trypho wanted to take the kingdom for himself. He was scared Jonathan would stop him. So he pretended to be friendly. He convinced Jonathan to send away most of his army. As soon as Jonathan entered the city of Ptolemais with only a small group, Trypho's men shut the gates and killed everyone with Jonathan. All Israel was heartbroken.
Historical Context
This chapter takes place around 144 BC. Jonathan was trying to keep Judea safe by building alliances with powerful nations like Rome and Sparta. Rome was the most powerful empire at the time, and having their friendship meant other nations would leave you alone.
The Jewish people had fought hard for years to protect their freedom. Jonathan's capture at the end of this chapter was a huge blow. Trypho was a sneaky general who used tricks instead of honest battles. His betrayal left the Jewish people without their leader and afraid of what would happen next.
