1 Samuel Chapter 3: Meaning

God calls out to the young boy Samuel at night, and Samuel becomes a prophet trusted by all of Israel.

Summary
At this time in Israel, hearing from God was very rare. The boy Samuel was sleeping in the Tabernacle one night when he heard someone call his name. He got up and ran to Eli, thinking the old priest had called him. But Eli said he did not call him. This happened three times. After the third time, Eli realized it was God calling the boy. He told Samuel to go back and lie down, and if he heard the voice again to say, "Speak, Lord. I am listening." God did call again. Samuel answered just as Eli had told him. Then God gave Samuel a very hard message. God said he was going to punish Eli's family for the way Eli's sons had behaved and for the way Eli had let it happen. It was not easy news to share. In the morning, Samuel was afraid to tell Eli what God had said. But Eli asked him to tell the truth and not to hide anything. Samuel told him everything. Eli accepted it and said that God would do what was right. From that point on, God spoke to Samuel many more times. All of Israel, from north to south, knew that Samuel was God's prophet. God let none of Samuel's words fall to the ground, everything he said came true.

Historical Context

This story happened around 1090 BC. For a long time before this night, there had been very few visions or messages from God. Israel had drifted away from him, and the priests were corrupt. Samuel was just a boy, but God chose him to start a new chapter.

Samuel became the bridge between the time of the judges and the time of the kings. He was the first person since Moses and Joshua to be widely recognized as God's spokesman across all of Israel. His role as a prophet would shape the entire nation for the rest of his life.
